The car ride: heaven or hell?

The unseen architecture of your child's relationship with football lives in a 20-minute drive — and what gets said inside it.

Every week, parents and players spend many hours driving to and from football. These car rides often provide the setting for parent–child conversations, especially after a match. Whether it happens rather casually and naturally, or there is a specific idea to cover, these conversations are a lot more impactful than parents think.

This is by now a well-known topic that has been extensively studied all over the world. Car rides are extremely important because of how dangerous these conversations in them can be. Even when trying to be positive and motivational, what seems to be a harmless chat is actually perceived in negative ways by the children.

A Traumatic Experience

What the research tells us

Here's what the research tells us: young athletes who feel judged by their parents after matches develop higher levels of performance anxiety over time. They start to fear the car ride more than the game itself. Some kids have told researchers they wish their parents wouldn't come to matches at all. A clear connection was made between the car ride experiences and increased risks of sport burn out and drop out. In other words, what seem to be harmless chats, motivational words or well-intended advice from parents are directly connected with failure in sport, including mental health issues.

Of course there's no harm intended — only care, support and a desire to experience football together as a family. But here's the problem: children don't experience it as love. They experience it as judgment.

The six words

In a landmark study, athletes were asked one simple question: "What is your worst memory from playing youth sports?" The overwhelming answer wasn't about coaches, referees, or teammates. It was about the car ride home. The post-game analysis. The well-meaning corrections from Mum or Dad.

And this applies to all ages. While it makes more sense to think of kids between 7 and 13 years of age, the reality is that adolescents also need the right support and the avoidance of unnecessary assessments.

Then, the athletes were asked: "What did your parents say that made you feel great, that you loved hearing?" The answer was just six words: "I love to watch you play."

Those six words say: I'm here for you, I love to watch you enjoy the game and I love being a part of this with you. That's all that matters — there's nothing on performance, or what happened or didn't or should or shouldn't have happened.

The Sanctuary Protocol

Strategies to turn the car ride into a positive experience

So, on top of avoiding those conversations, there are some strategies that can be followed to turn the car ride into positive experiences.

The main idea is to turn the car ride into a sanctuary. That is, into a place where the player can relax and be him or herself, doing whatever they need to do. This will be different in each case: going to the game often requires relaxing and focusing, and going back home requires settling down, working through the post-match sensations to turn the page and carry on with the rest of the day. So how do we help the child with this?

The first thirty seconds matter most.

Children read your face before they hear your words. A neutral, warm greeting at the car door sets the temperature of the whole drive.

The first signal that the car is a sanctuary is whose playlist runs the speaker. Hand them the aux — or the Spotify code — before you ask anything.

Other Approaches

Same destination, different routes

Some parents choose to take a laid-back approach whereby they show that, no matter what happens in the game, they are happy with their child, displaying the same content and relaxed post-match behavior. This ensures a stress-free car ride and general family environment, guaranteeing that football will not be a problem. There is only one risk associated with this: that the child may perceive that football, which tends to be the most important things for him or her, is not important for mum or dad, leading to feeling less supported and more lonely through the journey. This approach is compatible with the above-mentioned protocol, which leads to comfortable, child-led conversations where parents can show active listening and true care for both the kid and the football.

In other cases, distracting attention to something completely different from football right after the game is also useful. A typical case is to have a commitment that immediately follows the game — for example a family meal after a mid-morning match — so there is no time to think about, or to say anything: just get ready to focus on something else. This will keep things in perspective, sending the message that football is not the only important thing in life. Changing the focus point doesn't really interrupt the post-match process; if anything, it grounds it in real life, where emotions get processed inside ordinary scenes.

The Potential of Positive Car Rides

What positive car rides build

Every car ride is an opportunity to bond and to show the child what matters more, and why. Silence breeds comfort. Not-judging breeds trust and openness. A relaxed, tension-free environment creates an actual sanctuary — the kind a player will return to all season long.

When you let them lead the conversation, you teach them that their feelings matter more. That you are there with them and for them. That their initiative is valued. When you say "I love to watch you play," you teach them that joy matters more than outcomes.

And here's the thing: kids who feel unconditionally supported actually perform better over time. They take more risks. They're more creative. They recover faster from setbacks. Informed parental support with safety improves performance. The car ride is where that support is delivered — or where it is, quietly and weekly, withdrawn.
